Valtavaara is a true beauty in its wintry white outfit and the snow-covered trees shape the scenerie to a winter wonderland.
Valtavaara winter trail starts from Saarua, right next to Ruka Ski Resort slopes and leads all the way up to Valtavaara hilltop. This trail is all about ascents and descents and depending on the thickness of snow, the trail can be quite demanding. Coming down from the top, the trail follows the legendary Karhunkierros hiking trail towards Saarua when you reach the ski slopes.
Trail is marked with "Valtavaara winter trail" signposts and poles carrying a red reflector. Valtavaara campfire hut with campfire site and dry toilet is located a few hundred metres before raching the top. Valtavaara day-trip hut is located on the top. It is a tiny hut with a stove and small table set. Valtavaara cooking shelter is along the trail on the way down. Saaruan Taukotupa hut with toilets and barbeque place is located next to the starting/end point.

Snowshoes and trekking poles are needed.

The starting point is at Saarua parking area in east side of Ruka (address: Ahonjussintie 7, see in Google Maps)
From Ruka Village, you can take Village2Valley -gondola to Ruka Valley and walk 500 m to the starting point in Saarua.

Closest airport: Kuusamo (31 km). A regular bus connection between the airport and Kuusamo, Ruka and Salla is operated by Pohjolan Matka according to the flight schedules. Information about the public transport to and from Kuusamo airport can be found from Finavia web pages.
