For rest stops along the way we recommend the hut on the foot of Saarua slopes (signed "Taukotupa"), where you can grill indoors or outdoors and use the restrooms. Saarua is the place where the ski resort stores snow in huge piles over the summer, and it is also a good place to spot reindeers in the summertime.
There are also a couple scenic picnic tables along the trail, and almost all Ruka's restaurants are located close by from the trail.
Trail is marked with brown mountainbiker icons and signpost "Rukankierros". The markings are not very clear on all the parts of the trail, so we recommend having the trail map somewhere in hand. Construction of a new section of the FIS 5 race trail along the Ruka circular route began on 8 June 2026. Due to the works, hiking and mountain biking routes in the area will be temporarily closed at times throughout the summer, with disruptions expected until late September.As heavy machinery will be operating in the area, visitors are asked to follow all signage and be prepared for possible route closures.For more information, please see the City of Kuusamo’s official notice.
When you reach Juhannuskalliontie, cross the road and soon cross also Vuosseli road and start following the snowmobile route towards Vuosseli area. You will cross over Vuosseli road once more and pass Vuosselinportti Rental along gravel road. Cross over Saaruantie road to snowmobile route and follow the route all the way to Saarua parking lot. Follow the ski trail past Saarua "taukotupa" hut and start climb uphill. A few hundred metres from Saarua the trail crosses over Karhunkierros and Valtavaaran huiputus trails and continues straight uphill. Then you start having nice views towards Konttainen and Valtavaara hills behind you.
The trail start descending towards the ski stadium, and makes a sharp turn to right towards Talvijärvi lake. Follow the waterfront until you reach the ski slope area of Talvijärvi, and follow the ski lift track or the slope back up to Ruka village.

The starting place for the trail is Ruka Village, Ruka's centre right next to the slopes.

Closest airport: Kuusamo (31 km). A regular bus connection between the airport and Kuusamo, Ruka and Salla is operated by Pohjolan Matka according to the flight schedules.

Closest parking is the Ruka Parking Hall, address Rukakyläntie 6. Parking fee.
