Explore the fascinating history of Berkach on this hike, shaped by changing rulers and a vibrant Jewish community. The circular route passes politically significant sites, such as the former inner-German border, and ends at Schlossplatz, the location of the former manor house.
Start at the manor of the Freiherren von Stein, where the first Jewish family was mentioned in 1626. They initially had a synagogue and school there until 1852. Continue to the Hinterdorf of Berkach, where Jewish families acquired several farms. Visit the mikveh from 1838, a ritual bath rebuilt in 1990. Further through forest and fields, reach the Jewish cemetery established around 1825, with gravestones including one from 1855.
The hike provides insights into Jewish history, political circumstances, and life during that time. The tour is rounded off with a visit to the restored synagogue, a testament to cultural diversity.

Be cautious of crossing street traffic. Sections of the path are part of the local cycling network; therefore, watch out for cyclists.
Via A71 to exit 23 Rentwertshausen towards Behrungen (turn left from the motorway exit onto L2627)
Straight through Rentwertshausen to Nordheim.
Turn left in Nordheim and continue through Nordheim to Berkach.
At the intersection before the bus stop, turn half-left and ascend to Schlossplatz. Free parking is available here.
From here, walk about 100m passing the church on the right to reach "Wirthausplatz," the starting point of the circular route.
Via L3019 from Meiningen or Mellrichstadt:
In Henneberg turn left or right and go via Einödhausen, Schwickershausen to Nordheim.
Turn right in Nordheim, continue through Nordheim to Berkach.
Via L2686 from Hildburghausen via Römhild to Rentwertshausen, continue to Nordheim and Berkach.
You can reach Berkach by Deutsche Bahn to Meiningen station, from there take bus line 400/405 of the Meininger Busbetriebs GmbH (MBB) via Ritschenhausen - Bibra - Rentwertshausen to Berkach.
Free parking is available at Schlossplatz. (Google – NAV point)
