The Pillersee in St. Ulrich am Pillersee lies at an elevation of 835 meters above sea level in an idyllic mountain setting. It is fed by several mountain streams from the Loferer Steinberge and the Kitzbühel Alps, and its waters flow out via the Haselbach toward the Saalach.
The lake was formed around 15,000 years ago by a massive landslide that dammed up the valley. With a length of about 1.6 km and a width of up to 300 m, it is one of the region’s most striking mountain lakes.
The Pillersee owes its name to the dialect word “pillern,” which describes the characteristic, sometimes audible rushing of the water.
On the north shore lies the small pilgrimage church of St. Adolari, while the beach is located in the northeastern area. Despite its idyllic setting, the lake remains pleasantly cool even in summer, with temperatures around 20 °C.
