Regeneration spot 1: Waterfall (when arriving by (E-)bike)

Cooling with effect

Already on the way to the Kleinarler Hut, the sound of the waterfall sets a special mechanism in motion: Studies show that listening to the sound of water can increase alpha waves in the brain - typical patterns for mental relaxation, mindfulness, and light meditative states. Added to this is water as an element itself. It is the most valuable resource on our planet. Its mere presence gives you a feeling of safety and security. And when you feel safe, your stress level drops - completely automatically. Take off your shoes and step into the water barefoot. Yes, it’s cold. But it’s also invigorating. After a few deep breaths, you step out again and maybe immediately dare the next step inside. What you are doing right now is more than a brief stimulus: You are practicing Kneipp therapy. This traditional form of hydrotherapy has proven highly effective. Kneipp treatments can promote mobility and balance, relieve muscle tension, and speed up recovery after physical exertion. Studies also show that they can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. The targeted stimulus with cold water not only trains the vessels but also activates the body's own regulatory processes - a simple but effective impulse for health and well-being.

Exercise:  Take a short break here. Refresh your feet in the cool water.

Regeneration spot 2: Kleinarler Hut

At the Kleinarler Hut, Alois and his team always have a joke ready, and chatting with the alpine folks really gets you into the Wagrain-Kleinarl spirit. They spoil you with homemade delicacies as well as organic cheese and dairy products from the valley.

Did you know ...

...that alpine milk can offer nutritional advantages? With increasing altitude, solar intensity rises – and thus the formation of valuable secondary plant compounds in alpine herbs and grasses. Cows grazing on mountain pastures take up these bioactive ingredients through their feed, and some of these end up in the milk. The taste is also described as more intense and spicy, which is partly due to the variety of alpine herbs rich in essential oils. A real natural product with added value.

Regeneration spot 3: Trail uphill

Step by step to a clear head

You hike over alpine meadows uphill. The movement in fresh air strengthens especially your heart and lungs. With every step, you ruminate less and become more mindful. After the first 30 minutes (when you reach the Penkkopf), you feel how

everyday worries slowly fall away from you. Many people report that after an active day in nature they find it easier to relax in the evening. Also, with every meter of altitude, pollen exposure decreases, and you breathe in and out the pure mountain air.

Regeneration spot 4: Tree line

Where the forest thins out

The Kleinarler Hut is located at the tree line – a special feeling between forest and open view, where the landscape breathes and humans with it.

Tip: In autumn the forest "burns". Because the needles of the larches turn golden yellow to orange, and the view in this mountain region looks as if the forest were on fire.

Regeneration spot 5: Three Ponds

Pause for thoughts

The three ponds relax you. Simply because they are there. And because you are there.

As at the first regeneration spot, you feel safe because you are surrounded by the

most precious resource of our earth.

Invite yourself for a small mindfulness exercise:

Find a place on the pond shore and sit upright.  Keep your gaze straight ahead – keep your eyes open  Consciously notice your breathing. This works best if you mentally accompany your breaths with "in" and "out".  Do not evaluate thoughts that arise. Notice them and let them pass like little clouds in the sky.

A randomized controlled study showed that just four 5-minute mindfulness sessions over two weeks can lead to a significant reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression.

Regeneration spot 6: Cattle paths

Below the Penkkopf, grazing animals have formed small terraces and paths over time. They not only look interesting but also symbolize freedom and the joy of exploring in nature. When you are in this alpine natural landscape, you come into contact with the so-called alpine microbiome, i.e., microorganisms from the environment naturally found in the air, on plants, or in the soil.

Research shows: regular stays in natural environments can strengthen the immune system. Environmental microbes play an important role as they contribute to the maturation of the body's own defense, especially in childhood, promote the regulation of inflammatory processes, and support gut health.

A conscious moment in nature is thus an impulse for your immune system.

Regeneration spot 7: Penkkopf

A power place with 360° panorama

This wide view lets you take a deep breath. You feel elevated, free, and inwardly spacious. Rumination recedes into the background because your mind is busy marveling. The panorama redirects attention from circling thoughts, awakens positive emotions, and demonstrably reduces negative ones. In psychology, this repeated, usually unproductive brooding over stressful or negative experiences is called rumination. Experiences in nature, especially wide views like this one, can help break this cycle and improve emotional well-being.

When you stand at the summit cross, feel free to reach for the summit book of the Salzburg Summit Game. It describes a ritual inviting you to experience a short moment of mindfulness.

Regeneration spot 8: Trail downhill

The underestimated muscle builder

Even if downhill walking is often seen as a problem due to knee pain, it actually poses a great opportunity to keep your knees fit. Especially eccentric training, where the muscles are loaded while yielding, specifically strengthens the thigh muscles, improves joint stability, coordination, and neuromuscular control. Studies show that with moderate energy expenditure

it can effectively contribute to preventing knee complaints.

Tip: If you do not already suffer from knee pain, it is better to avoid poles.

Regeneration spot 9: Kurzeggalm

Between cowbells and cheese bread

The Kurzeggalm combines Wagrain-Kleinarl charm with mountain idyll and treats that will pamper your palate. Exchange a few words with the alpine farmers and you really arrive in Wagrain-Kleinarl. They spoil you with homemade delicacies and cheese and dairy products. The mountain milk here is just as valuable as at the Kleinarler Hut.

And your body begins to regenerate - completely automatically.

Trasa

By (E-)Bike

Ride along the bike path downstream to the Öbrist farm (approx. 3 km after Kleinarl). Shortly after the farm, turn right and ride the forest road "Öbristwaldstraße" (No. 72) uphill until you reach the Kleinarler Hut (10.5 km, 740 meters elevation gain). With an e-bike, it takes about 1:20 hours; with a mountain bike about 2:30 hours.

On Foot

Also accessible on foot from Kleinarl (No. 712, 3.9 km, 760 meters elevation gain), about 2:30 hours. Alternatively, you can drive by car to the Hirschleiten parking lot

and hike from there about 1:45 hours to the Kleinarler Hut (2.6 km, 550 meters elevation gain).

Behind the Kleinarler Hut, take the hiking trail (No. 87) and follow it first to the ridge (=left) to the three ponds and finally to the Penkkopf (=right). Return the same way or alternatively take trail No. 87 to the saddle, turn right there, and follow trail No. 81 to the Kurzeggalm. Via the Shared Trail, you reach the Kleinarler Hut again. Walking time: about 45 minutes each way (if you return from the Penkkopf) and you overcome around 230 meters elevation gain.

It's your time to regenerate and not a race. Take the time you need. And all walking times are completely correct.

And this is how you reach the starting point - the Kleinarler Hut - by (E-)bike:

From Wagrain:

Direction Kleinarl (Note: Partly you ride along the road. This is recommended for experienced road cyclists) up to "Feuersang". There turn right and follow Sauwaldstraße (No. 72) towards Kleinarler Hut/Kurzeggalm and then turn off to the Kleinarler Hut (12.3 km, 900 meters elevation gain).

From Kleinarl:

Ride along the bike path downstream to the Öbrist farm (approx. 3 km after Kleinarl). Shortly after the farm, turn right and ride the forest road "Öbristwaldstraße" (No. 72) uphill until you reach the Kleinarler Hut (10.5 km, 740 meters elevation gain).

You can combine both variants into a loop - regardless of whether you come from Wagrain or Kleinarl. You reach the waterfall via the described variant from Kleinarl.

Tip: The descent is also possible via the Hirschleit Trail. It starts about 300 meters below the Kleinarler Hut/Kurzeggalm (1.2 km, 263 meters downhill). This is a single trail rated S2 and only suitable for experienced mountain bikers. You arrive directly in the village of Kleinarl.
