Cycling tour German Wine Route / 1st stage Wissembourg - Herxheim / Hayna

The 1st stage of the German Wine Route cycling tour takes you along the Kraut & Rüben cycle path from Schweigen-Rechtenbach to Herxheim. You start in Wissembourg and follow the country road to the German Wine Gate in Schweigen-Rechtenbach on the German-French border. Then follow the Wine Route to the roundabout and leave it at the fourth exit to reach the farm road. From there, follow the waymark of the Kraut and Rüben cycle path, which leads you through fields and vineyards to Schweighofen.

Just before Schweighofen you reach the main road, where you turn left. Cross the main road through the town of Schweighofen. At the end of the town, turn right again onto the cycle path. The cycle path leads to the town of Kapysweyer. From the cycle path, turn right into the main street of Kapysweyer. Here again, follow the main street and Obere Hauptstraße through the town. At the end of Obere Hauptstraße, turn right onto Bahnhofstraße of Steinfeld. After crossing the railway tracks, turn immediately left and follow the path running parallel to the railway tracks.

When you arrive in the town of Schaidt, veer slightly right onto the main road, then immediately turn left into Speyererstraße. Follow Speyererstraße through the town. At the end of the street, turn right and then left to get back onto one of the farm roads. Follow the cycle path, which first continues straight for a longer distance. Then there is a turn to the left and right, where you drive along the Otterbach and Dorfbach creeks and reach the town of Freckenfeld. At the main street, turn left onto Lindenstraße, Kirchstraße, Raiffeisenstraße. Alternatively, you can also pass through the town via the main street. Here the cycle path makes a bow to the north and you reach Herxheim via farm and cycle paths.
