Mountain Historical Routes | Assietta Road

The road is a true “system of routes.” Starting from Pian dell'Alpe, in the municipality of Usseaux, you pedal passing at the foot of several important peaks. Reaching Fraiteve, you can easily descend towards Sestriere along the main road and then reach the Pass or descend the Susa Valley, or, via a route of various roads, reach the village of Sauze d'Oulx and then Oulx, to connect to the road system of upper Susa Valley, towards Bardonecchia or the Monginevro. The main axis continues east in the Chisone Valley towards Prà Catinat and the Fenestrelle Fortress, in the Susa Valley to Meana and Susa through the Finestre Pass.

From Sestriere, take the municipal road towards Colle Basset, where it meets the SP173 Strada dell'Assietta. From Sauze d'Oulx, take the road towards the hamlet of Richardette, then Sportinia and Colle Basset. From Pragelato, head down towards Pinerolo, take the turnoff for Balboutet/Pian dell'Alpe, and continue until you reach the dirt road of SP173. aFrom Susa, continue towards Meana, take the SP172 towards Colle delle Finestre, and then take the dirt road of SP173.

The Strada dell'Assietta (SP 173) will be open from July 1st to October 31st in 2026, except for emergencies caused by bad weather or early snowfall that may make traffic unsafe. Since it is a dirt road, a 30 km/h speed limit will be in effect, along with a ban on overtaking and parking outside of designated parking areas.

⛔ Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tons and a width exceeding 2 meters are prohibited.

During the months of July and August, motorized vehicles are prohibited on Wednesdays and Saturdays, days entirely dedicated to hikers and cyclists.

The spectacular route is suitable for mountain bikes and gravel bikes, and every July it hosts the Assietta Legend MTB race, starting and finishing in Sestriere.

This watershed was the site of the historic battle of the same name on July 19, 1747, in which the vastly outnumbered Savoy troops blocked and defeated the French invaders intent on conquering Piedmont. Every year, the event is commemorated with a costumed reenactment, and the date is a regional historical anniversary. Numerous fortresses dating back to different eras line the route, forming a veritable open-air museum of the history of mountain fortifications.
