On an area of 2.5 hectares, Europe’s largest contiguous lady’s slipper orchid habitat is located in the Martinau floodplain.
From mid-May to mid-June, more than 6,000 specimens of the rare orchid species Cypripedium calceolus, the bright yellow lady’s slipper, bloom in the hamlet of Martinau in the nature park municipality of Elmen.
The particularly high occurrence of a fungus required for the germination of the plant enables this mass development.
The highly sensitive lady’s slipper, also known as “Kriemhild’s helmet,” is protected and is one of the most magnificent wild-growing orchid species in Europe. In 2010, it was named Orchid of the Year.
The mountain rescue service monitors the 2.5-hectare area and ensures that visitors stay on the paths and do not dig up any plants.
