A cultural-historical start. First Marburg with the fascinating Elisabeth Church and the timber-framed old town, and shortly after the start of the hike, you pass the Behring Mausoleum. It is gigantic. Emil von Behring, the first Nobel laureate for medicine, is called the "Savior of Children" because he defeated diphtheria. The short detour to the Weißenstein ruins is worth it. The castle ruins lie on a 260 m high hilltop of light sandstone. And back to the Lahn - but don't worry: hikers and cyclists don't get in each other's way.
It's a pity that we already have to leave the quaint town of Marburg. At the Elisabeth Church, follow the signs up the stairs to St. Michael's Chapel, known to the people of Marburg as "Michelchen." Continuing uphill through the forest, you reach the Behring Mausoleum. The Nobel laureate born in 1854 was buried here in 1917 with great public participation.
Afterwards, the Lahnwanderweg winds beautifully through the forest before reaching the Marienhäuschen. Through the forest and down a small staircase, you go down to Wehrda, which we leave to the right. After a short descent, there is another ascent to the junction to Weißenstein Castle. The light sandstone on the forested hill gave the castle and mountain their name. You should definitely take this short detour, as the castle ruins offer a beautiful view and a rest spot at just the right time for the hiker.
Now follows a solid climb again, which is once again rewarded with a beautiful view. Two wind turbines belong to the citizens' initiative "Wind Power for Michelbach," and soon the houses of the village can be seen. Following the markings, you descend through the attractive hilly landscape to Sterzhausen. There you change sides of the Lahn and hike through the beautiful Lahnknie nature reserve. The adjacent floodplain forest, grassland, and fallow areas, as well as the hedges, provide a habitat for many endangered animal and plant species. Without further significant climbs, it then goes to the stage destination of Caldern. The small town in the upper Lahn valley was already mentioned in the early 9th century in the documents of Fulda Monastery as Calantra.
Normal hiking equipment required. Take a backpack snack and drinks with you.
