The trail of the Trappists

In Sotelsko, continue in the direction of the main road, cross the main road and continue walking along the former Trappist trail to Sremič, which was used by the Trappist monks to walk to their place of work and to transport wine from the estate at Sremič. On your way you will have a nice view of an ancient yew tree. The presence of the Trappists is noted by the outhouse with a cellar and the surrounding vineyards. The trail continues to Grmada, the highest point of the trail. Grmada offers a scenic view across the Pannonian plains, the Krško fields, and on a clear day, all the way to the Kamnik Alps. From Grmada the trail will take you through vineyards to the Church of St. Hermagoras dating back to the 14th century.

You will head to the forest past the church and descend down the forest trail to the marketplace in Brestanica, then ascend up along the road to the Pohle Inn, and afterwards to the famous Church of St. Mary of Lourdes built in 1914, one of the largest churches in Slovenia, but most certainly the largest church in the Lower Sava Valley. You will then descend down the steps to reach the main road and continue in the direction of the next information board next to the Kozmus Hostel, where you can find interesting facts on the Church of St. Sebastian and get to know the former image of this part of Brestanica. You will continue uphill among the orchards up to Rajhenburg Castle, to the partially renovated buildings that played a key role in terms of the economy during the time of the Trappist order, which is further supported by the information board giving us all the basic information on the production of chocolate and liqueurs.

You will finish your journey at Rajhenburg Castle owned by the Trappists from 1881 to 1941. Nowadays, the castle with several renovated halls for hosting events, a wine cellar, a restaurant and museum collection tells a story about the castle’s rich past, which started in the 9th century and has continued up to the present time. If you take part in an organized hiking event, you will be offered a selection of refreshments and wine along the way. On request we also offer organized tours of the wine cellar or the vineyard cottages or lunches in one of the local restaurants.
