S-Bahn line 3 leads right into the center of salt, culture, and a touch of Hallein tradition. The town with its special charm is home to the once most productive saltworks in the Eastern Alpine region on the Pernerinsel – right in the Salzach.
Stroll further towards the bridge and you'll find the next historical highlight, the Celtic Museum. The salt trade of the Celts, finds from the Iron Age, and the historical salt production are vividly presented there. Pause for a moment at Schifferplatz on the Salzach and think back to the time when there was still salt shipping here and heavily loaded watercraft navigated the Salzach. Exciting! What would life be without salt in the soup! The cozy stone bench in front of the picturesque house (Silent Night Museum) and the grave of F. X. Gruber awaits its visitors. The wrought iron enclosed gravesite next to the Hallein parish church is the only remaining one from the cemetery that was closed in 1882. Those interested in beer culture and local delicacies who want to take a longer walk should definitely not miss the Hofbräu Kaltenhausen brewery inn.
From the station there is a historic old town walking route through Hallein. Depending on how long you linger at the numerous sights, it takes about 1 to 3 hours to complete.

It doesn't get any shorter: 24 minutes from Salzburg main station with S-Bahn line 3 to the old town of Hallein. If you come from the opposite direction, take the same line from Bischofshofen. If you prefer the bus, take lines 160 or 170.

Juniper berry is basically the main ingredient of Gin Alpin. You can taste it at the well-known Guglhof distillery in Hallein (Davisstraße 13) – a real must!
