Edgar cannot stop marveling. Already on the journey from Salzburg Local Station to the Weitwörth-Nussdorf stop, he can watch a true wonderland with deer, wild boars, and pheasants from his window seat. And then the nature experience trail, which leads in a good hour around the large lake and further to the Salzach. At the new floodplain workshop, Edgar meets the kingfisher Erik, who can tell so much about the fascinating Salzachau. Where there used to be monotonous spruce forest, a flourishing, species-rich floodplain landscape is now spreading after renaturation. Erik says that frogs, birds, and fish settled in within a short time. Willows were among the first plant inhabitants; they grow over a meter in height in one year. These pioneers form, together with alders, the "soft floodplain", which can cope better with floods than, for example, the oaks in the "hard floodplain". The kingfisher Erik knows a lot about the floodplain, but now, in the birdwatching station made of planks, he becomes very quiet. After all, he wants to show his friend Edgar his family, which lives over there in a nesting cavity. Whether the two were successful, we do not know. But the trip to the floodplain is definitely an invaluable gain.

From the Weitwörth-Nussdorf train stop, the route leads 200 m along the railway towards Oberndorf and then crosses to the left. Along the path, new wetlands and amphibian ponds are emerging; the freshly sown, species-rich meadows have already passed their first bloom test. Also quite new is the floodplain workshop, jointly managed by Haus der Natur and Land Salzburg, which is open especially for school classes but also for family excursions (program at www.salzachauen.at). The barrier-free nature experience trail branches off left onto a wooden walkway and leads past the observation station, with a very rewarding detour to the Salzach on the north side of the lake, returning to the floodplain workshop in about three-quarters of an hour. If you feel like it, the floodplain hike can be extended on well-signposted paths to Oberndorf (45 min.). Return in this case from Oberndorf-Laufen train stop.
