The Königsweg 3rd stage (Mühlbach - Dienten)

The starting point is the Mühlbach tourism office. Cross the parking lot of the Spar supermarket and the bridge. Then turn right onto the village promenade, path no. 15. Following this path, past the mill with the Kneipp facility, you will reach the valley station of the Karbachalm cable car after about 1.5 km. With the Karbachalm cable car, you comfortably and quickly overcome 670 meters of elevation. After a short panoramic view of the surrounding mountain world, the actual route begins. On path no. 15, you hike uphill, passing to the left of the Karbachalm mountain station, on a meadow and forest trail to the Mühlbach ski hut. Then continue over gentle alpine meadows and finally a short, steep section through rocky terrain before reaching the highest point of this route, Schneeberg with summit cross (1,921 m). Here you can take a short break to enjoy the unique mountain panorama.

From here it goes slightly downhill, through blueberry bushes and heather, past windswept wind trees. Path no. 15 leads to the saddle and further to the Klausalm cross. Before it goes uphill again, turn right and follow path no. 57a to the Sunnhüttl. On the flat, forest-free path no. 63, accompanied by the majestic mountain backdrop of the Hochkönig, you continue the hike towards Dienten. In front of the mountain station of the Zachhofalm cable car, this path joins path no. 15 again, leading past the mountain station and the summit cross of Wastlhöhe (1,737 m). Further over alpine meadows and meadows you reach the Bürglalm, which invites you to a last rest with a splendid view of the surrounding mountain world (alternatively wider gravel path no. 63). Then it goes somewhat steeper downhill on path no. 15, past the Plaudereggalm. After passing a forest path, you can already see the picturesque mountain village of Dienten. A short section on the forest road downhill, the hiking trail path no. 5 branches off to the left. The last section of this day route leads steeper downhill again, through a piece of forest and then over meadows straight into the village of Dienten. The total walking time is about 5 hours.

The LEISURELY variant (with use of the summer cable cars): On some days, the Karbachalm cable car in Mühlbach and the Bürglalm cable car in Dienten operate simultaneously. These summer cable cars are suitable as assistance for the ascent to the Karbachalm or the descent to Dienten from the Bürglalm. The total walking time is about 3.5 hours.

Planning and preparation: Plan every intended mountain tour carefully in advance. Hiking maps and guides as well as information from alpine clubs and locals such as mountain guides and hut hosts can be helpful for this.

Equipment: In the mountains, you need appropriate equipment and clothing, especially sturdy, high footwear with a grippy sole. Weather and cold protection are essential; the weather can often change unexpectedly.

Togetherness: Observe the 10 rules for the proper handling of grazing animals and leave no waste in nature!

Do not kick stones: Do not kick stones because this can seriously endanger other hikers. Marked spots with danger of falling rocks should be crossed as quickly as possible and with attention and caution.

Turn back in time: This is not a shame but a sign of prudence. It becomes necessary when the weather changes, fog sets in, and also if the path is too difficult or not in good condition.

Arrival from Salzburg: On the A10 motorway to Bischofshofen exit, then on the B311 towards Bischofshofen. The Hochkönig federal road/B164 to Mühlbach.
Arrival from Innsbruck/Kufstein: On the Loferer Straße/B178 towards St. Johann i.T., then via the Hochkönig federal road/B164 via Saalfelden and Maria Alm to Dienten or to Filzensattel and further to Mühlbach.
For the use of the Austrian motorway and expressway network a valid vignette is required. Also, the carriage obligation of first aid supplies, warning triangle and warning vest applies. More information at Asfinag.
