Discover the many facets of Faugères as you go.
First, let yourself be charmed by the Mediterranean flora and dry-stone architecture of the Mates Basses site, then by the vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see.
A few kilometers further on, the village reveals its secrets.
A multi-faceted itinerary that will give you an insight into the history of local viticulture.
1
Departure from Vilavigne cellar From the cellar parking lot, go down the track and, at the crossroads, turn right towards the Mates basses site. Walk 150 m, then turn left onto a path. Climb through holm oak woods along low drystone walls. Walk between the low walls and terraces to reach the "A voix basse" work by Sétois artist Jean Denant. From the terrace above the work, follow the track to the left. At the end, turn left and start downhill. At the intersection, turn right. Further on, the track overhangs the railroad line and then reaches a road at the level of a transformer.
2
Cross the RD 154. Turn left onto the D 154 (keep to the side of the road) for 200 m. Pass the power station, then turn right up the road. Continue for approx. 400 m, passing a vineyard and reaching a crossroads. Go left, past a mazet and, at the next intersection, go left. Follow the road downhill, past an embankment, then up alongside the houses to the crossroads (the old Faugères railway station can be seen on the left). Turn right and use the footpath under the bridge. Continue uphill to a crossroads.
3
Crossroads. Cross the D154 (take care), then take the right-hand road through the vineyards to an intersection (don't miss the old mill on the right, symbol of the Faugères appellation). Go left down the track, then continue for 600 m. Leave the track and take a left-hand path through the vines. Rejoin the track and continue downhill. Walk 800 m, then turn right and pass through a tunnel under the railroad. Follow the path along walled gardens to a crow's-foot. Take the left-hand path up to Faugères, Place Sardinoux.
4
Faugères, place Sardinoux. Cross the road at the crosswalk, then turn right to pass under the porch of rue du Portail d'Aval. Go up the rue Droite, past the Louvetier (no. 7) and Viguier (no. 34) houses, to reach the chemin de la Tour at the top of the stairs. Turn right, then left up to the calvary. Continue left along chemin de la Marbrière, where the road becomes a steep incline. Continue through garrigue and dry stone. At the "Grenouille" crossroads, take the left-hand track down to the road. Turn left onto the road and, at the crossroads, continue carefully left along the road. Walk 100 m, then cross at a crosswalk. Drive alongside the shops, then continue straight ahead along the downhill road. In a bend, go around the winery and reach a crossroads.
5
Cave coopérative. Turn right, walk 200 m along the railroad, then pass under the bridge. Then turn right and follow the track for 300 m. At the crossroads (picnic table), continue uphill. Continue along the D909 to reach the cellar and parking lot.
