The old town of the northern Hessian half-timbered gem Eschwege is a half-timbered idyll with more than 1,000 well-maintained half-timbered houses. The unique ornaments and artistic flat and figure carvings contribute to the special flair. Worth seeing are the market church, the Neustädter church, and the Landgrave's castle, and of course the old town for strolling and indulging. Much variety lies on your way in between: The green paths out of town, the open fields and meadows, and the basalt towers of the Blaue Kuppe, a geologically interesting former volcanic vent, will delight you. A shortcut via the Werra-Castle Trail Hessen, marked with X5 H, is signposted.
The route leads out of the town to the natural monument Blaue Kuppe. The climb up to Lotzenkopf (466 m) is demanding; through the Schlierbachswald forest with a view from Sommerberg, it then descends again. Over meadows and fields, you reach the Eschwege Leuchtberge (289 and 319 m) with their distinctive shape. From the Bismarck Tower there, you can enjoy a panoramic view before returning to the town. The Sophiengarten on Schulberg invites you for a last rest; it is accessible via a signposted detour. Please do not leave the paths in the Blaue Kuppe nature reserve!
