Discoverer route - Vineyard mosaic in the central Seewinkel

Walnut trees have been planted in the Seewinkel since Roman times. Traditionally planted by farmers as an additional source of income alongside wine, they can still be found today in many vineyards and along roadside edges.

The middle spotted woodpecker often inhabits habitats near humans. It can be found both in settlements and in cultural landscapes with a sufficient supply of tall trees. Besides animal food, it often eats fruits or nuts.

Alongside the lesser redpoll and the tree sparrow, the smallest of the finch species, the European serin, also breeds in the vineyards. The splendid yellow male serins like to carry their squeaky, ringing song from treetops or during flight.

With its blue flowers, the tall common viper's bugloss, frequently found along paths or road embankments, can already be spotted from a distance. When touching the stem, one feels the stinging bristles of the plant.

In the open cultural landscape, one often sees a small bird of prey holding itself 'still' high in the air with vigorous wing beats. This so-called "hovering" is used by the common kestrel to spot mice, which it then catches in a lightning-fast dive.
