The Truth About Lainzer Tiergarten Loop
Stage 1 : My journey started right at the bus stop, because for public transport users, every kilometer counts! The path followed the asphalted Gütenbachstraße towards the Gütenbach Tor. This route is a game of contrasts: sections with beautiful, shady rows of trees alternate with open areas where trees are sparse or completely missing. In those open parts, you have to endure the direct heat of the sun on the paved road. A scenic yet demanding start that proves why realistic route planning is so essential.
Face-to-Face with a Wild Boar
Stage 2 : Just after passing the Gütenbach Tor, I suddenly came face-to-face with a large wild boar foraging for food! Only a week ago, I read a news report about a wild boar attacking and seriously injuring two hikers, so my heart was definitely racing. However, when it looked at me, it seemed to mistake me for an Asian "Wu Song" (a legendary hero) because of my wide-brimmed hat. The boar looked startled, stepped back, and waited hesitantly for me to pass before crossing the path again. I walked on cautiously, constantly checking behind my back. A few dozen meters later, I met a couple with two young children (about 6-8 years old). I showed them the photo to warn them about the potential danger. Strangely, they seemed more excited than scared—sometimes local Viennese calmness is truly mind-boggling!
The Picturesque Path Under the Green Canopy
Stage 3 : After the thrilling encounter with the wild boar, the path continued from Gütenbach Tor towards Laaber Tor. This section was incredibly beautiful and poetic. A wonderful forest path emerged, fully shaded by a dense canopy of ancient trees. When you look at things through a humorous lens, every journey turns into a delightful adventure! Walking under the cool shade of these giants felt amazing after the hot, sunny patches earlier, making me completely forget about my fatigue. Nature here was at its most peaceful and scenic state.
The Untamed Beauty Outside the Walls
Stage 4 : After exiting through the Laaber Tor, the path continued along the outside of the Lainzer Tiergarten stone wall. This section was absolutely breathtaking and easily rivaled the trails inside—perhaps it was even more beautiful! The narrow gravel path wound through a wilder, more untouched landscape. I was especially captivated by the ancient trees wrapped in lush green ivy. The peaceful silence and the vibrant greenery away from the popular routes turned this part of the hike into a truly poetic highlight.
The Smart Decision at the Crossroads
Stage 5 : At this crossroads, marked by a wooden shelter and large stacks of logs, were the crucial signposts. Here, I faced a choice: either follow the inaccurate online guides and trace a grueling path back to Gütenbach Tor, or listen to my own body. I unhesitatingly chose the wiser option: to exit the forest and head straight towards Laab im Walde to catch the bus home. It was absolutely the right call, protecting my health and bringing this demanding yet insightful trek to a happy, safe conclusion.
