The 7,154 km² federal state of Salzburg impresses with its scenic diversity. The range extends from the gentle lakes in the Flachgau region to the glaciers on Austria's highest mountains. Along with or precisely because of the diversity of landscapes, a very different residential and architectural culture has also developed. This is reflected in the 100 rebuilt original buildings in the Großgmain Open-Air Museum. Often you don't even feel like you're in a museum, because almost all houses, alpine pastures, barns, workshops, or mills can be entered and explored. If special demonstrations take place, real life returns to the buildings that are over 500 years old. As in reality, the Lungau region is also represented in the Open-Air Museum as the highest area. There is even a free, 1.7 km long train that connects the regions, and for children, there is also a wonderful playground next to the Salettl inn.
The stroll across the federal state of Salzburg begins with the entrance to the Thanggütl, a typical Flachgau farmstead from 1736. Where the farm animals were originally housed, tickets are now sold. From the path through the Flachgau, there are frequent detours: one leads immediately to the left to the Hintersee mill, another to the right to the Lohner estate from Oberndorf, in front of which a magnificent farmer's garden blooms. The village grocery, located in the next building, an old-age house from Thalgau, was the mega supermarket until the 1950s where (almost) everything could be bought. Deer soap, twig brooms, coconut sticks, and much more can still be taken home today. The journey continues to the Tennengau, where the Salettl inn, playground, and for adults the house brewery are just right. The change to the Pongau is noticeable by the paired farms, some of which are over 500 years old. The path then leads gently uphill to the Grainmeisteralm in the highest part of the state, the Lungau. In the Pinzgau, a trail branches left to the Liesermühle before continuing past many objects towards the exit.
