The small Gehretswald route (length: 3.8 km) offers a wonderful view over the expanses of the Pfälzer Bergland. At the highest point of the route, you have a panoramic view of the neighboring communities. Additionally, with a bit of luck, you can catch a glimpse of the forest animals. Worth a visit as well is the Freilichtbühne Katzweiler. It is the largest of its kind in the Palatinate. At the start and end point of the route is the , which is excellent for a rest.
From the parking lot at Lautertalhalle, go straight towards the open-air stage. Behind the open-air stage, take the path to the left into the forest and after a slight ascent, continue to follow this route. At the end of the path, the route bends left to a clearing. Walk along the clearing and then follow the marker to the right. The route now continues in switchbacks. Always go straight and keep left. The last stretch leads downhill past the soccer field back to Lautertalhalle.

Any hiker who crosses closed areas (barrier tape, "Caution hunting" etc.), even on weekends, is acting with gross negligence and is responsible for their own actions!
As the route mostly runs through forested area, sufficient sun protection is ensured in summer.
In autumn and winter, the route is somewhat more challenging because the forest floor can be slippery due to wet leaves.
From Mannheim and Saarbrücken, take the A6 exit "Kaiserslautern West", follow federal road 270 towards Otterbach, then Lauterecken. At the roundabout, take the Lauterecken exit. Pass through the Sambach district to reach Katzweiler. Along B270 through the town center to "Schafmühle". Follow the local signage. Turn left at "Schafmühle", cross the railway crossing, on the left is Lautertalhalle with parking and the Nordic walking information board.

Schafmühle
The mill on the Lauter was first mentioned in 1272. In 1807, the oil mill at Schafmühle was built. On the former estate, whose foundation was laid by the honorable reeve Martin Weißmann, the grinding mill still exists today. Today, the mill houses the restaurant "Schafmühle".
The Freilichtbühne Katzweiler is the largest of its kind in the Palatinate.
