Treidlerweg

The start is at the hiking car park in Hördt, near the information board. Here we turn right into "Rheinstraße." Passing the depot, we now head towards the nature reserve "Hördter Rheinaue" . After just a few meters, a bridge over the Michelsbach is reached, leading over a true water wilderness . Just behind it, the path splits. We turn immediately left and continue straight along the Michelsbach. At the end of the path is a crossroads. Here we continue straight ahead, onto an earthy forest path. The forest becomes increasingly wild, with swampy spots visible all along the path's edge. At a fork, continue straight. We now stay on this earthy path, ignoring various side trails.

At a hiking pavilion , we cross an intersection straight ahead. Finally, we come to a wide forest path, which we follow to the right. After about 200 m, we reach a large intersection in the middle of the forest and turn left. At a small lake, the next crossroads. We continue straight ahead, seeing a large body of water to the left. Above this unique natural paradise, we go straight through the floodplain forest. Then our path makes a slight right curve, leaves the floodplain forest, and meets—at a cornfield—open terrain. We turn left, hike along the field until we plunge back into the forest.

While the large body of water remains hidden from view by an earthen embankment on the left, we pass fish pond after fish pond on the right.

Suddenly, a small viewpoint appears on the left, offering a view of the previously concealed water surface.

Finally, we reach an asphalt pedestrian and bicycle path running somewhat elevated on a dam. We now walk about 400 m right along it.

At a crossroads, we leave the asphalt path, turn left, and follow the comfortable earth path back into the swampy floodplain forest. After just a few minutes, we reach the Rhine . We walk along its magnificent bank to the right for some time. We leave the riverside path at the second turn into the floodplain forest. Straight ahead, a few meters ahead, we meet again on the combined walking and cycling path on the dike . We go directly up the dike to the right and continue straight along it. To the right, we enjoy the view of the old Rhine branch. After some meters, a path turning left appears opposite the forest edge. We leave the dike, cross the walking and cycling path, and follow this path back into the forest. Now it continues on a wide forest path. At a large intersection with four paths, we turn right. A bridge leads us over the Michelsbach , then the oak-elm forest lies behind us. We continue our way through large field landscapes. After about 300 m, we reach a crossroads and turn right. Suddenly, a magnificent gravel lake appears to the right in the open fields, framed by reeds.

Directly behind the pond, our path forks. We continue straight into a small woodland. Soon, we step out again onto meadows and fields and then reach—a the forest edge—a crossroads.

We continue straight ahead, along an orchard belt, towards the village.

On an asphalt path, we finally turn right and walk straight past meadows and fields towards a small forest. Here we turn left and continue to follow the Michelsbach's bank, which hides behind the trees. At the end of the path, we turn left to shortly return to the car park.

Clothing and shoes adapted to the weather. Where pristine nature meets water, there are also some biting insects. With insect repellent, this will certainly not be a problem.

The Treidlerweg is not passable during high water.

Especially in autumn, note that fallen leaves can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you believe certain sections are impassable to you, you should bypass them. Particularly in adverse weather, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections.

By car via the A8 and A65 Karlsruhe/Landau. From A8 Karlsruhe exit Wörth on B9 to the Hördt exit. Via A65 Landau exit Herzheim, continue via Rülzheim towards Hördt. In Hördt follow the signs to the sports field. Navigation destination entry: corner Kirchstraße/Rheinstraße, 76771 Hördt

By train to Rülzheim station. The S-Bahn station is about 2 km from the starting point. Continue by bus line 589 or on foot on the "Palatinate Way of St. James" (marked with a white shell) to Hördt.

You will only find refreshment opportunities at the start or end point. For example, the pub Zum Schützenhaus in Hördt. For on the way, we recommend packed lunch.
