This stage winds through the impressive and unspoiled river landscape of the Hahnenbach Valley, offering a soothing sense of peace and plenty of natural tranquility. Shortly after setting out, breathtaking...
We then reach the former visitor mine. Here, a kiosk invites you to take a short break. In the fossil museum located right next door, we can delve into the region’s fascinating geological history during a tour and discover the impressive fossils that the Hunsrück shale has preserved over millions of years.
Another highlight along this stage is the reconstructed Celtic settlement of Altburg. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who settled here more than 2,000 years ago.
The trail then follows the Hahnenbach stream—sometimes right along the water’s edge, sometimes a short distance away.
In the final section, the stage leads over the Wartenberg. From several vantage points, you can enjoy beautiful views of Rhaunen and the surrounding landscape.
Nature, history, and beautiful views make this stage a varied tour through the Hahnenbach Valley.
The 15th stage of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig leads from Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle, on the edge of the village Bundenbach, through the Hahnenbachtal to Rhaunen. At Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle there is a hiking car park, and from there we can start our route directly. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs here parallel to the Soonwaldsteig and also to the Traumschleife Hahnenbachtaltour. It starts through the Hahnenbachtal, where after a short time we reach a viewpoint with a beautiful view of the Schmidtburg castle ruin. Continuing on to the Celtic settlement Altburg, where the paths of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and the Soonwaldsteig separate again. We hike the Hahnenbachtal a little further before entering the Idarbach valley. We now follow the Idarbach to Rhaunen. Sometimes a little away, sometimes directly along the brook. In the last part, it goes over the Wartenberg, which offers beautiful views of Rhaunen and the surroundings at some points. This is where the stage destination is reached.

Our tips for a carefree hiking pleasure
Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and shoes, it is twice as fun. Functional clothing, poles, and breathable backpacks are comfortable when hiking. However, good shoes are indispensable. For longer distances, we recommend sturdy hiking boots with grippy, non-slip soles. Also think of sun protection and bring a drink. One liter of water is ideal.
The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a natural path, which is 65% over soft forest ground, grassy paths, or along brook courses. This special quality can, however, lead to problems after longer periods of rain and make parts of the path difficult to walk. Therefore, sturdy footwear is definitely recommended.
