This leisurely cycle tour starts directly at the Melk pier, where the Danube boats dock. From there, you cycle past the Wachauarena Melk. Through the historic old town, past the parish church with a view of Melk Abbey. Continue cycling through the town centre, past the Löwenpark and past the Senker car dealership towards the football stadium. After Schrattenbruck, you switch to country lanes where you can enjoy the wide views over fields and the picturesque landscape. Shortly before Anzendorf, the gentle ascent to Schallaburg begins. You can take it easy for the last few metres and look forward to the imposing castle complex. Once you reach the top, a wonderful view and the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat await you. The route is easy to cycle and is ideal as a short half-day tour for connoisseurs who want to combine culture and nature.
Author's tip
This tour is most beautiful if you combine it with a visit to Schallaburg Castle. I therefore recommend cycling the route between mid-April and the end of October, when the exhibition and gardens are open. It is best to start comfortably in the morning in Melk, cycle through the old town and across fields up to Schallaburg Castle, enjoy lunch there in the castle restaurant and then visit the exhibition and the Renaissance garden. This turns the cycle tour into a relaxed day trip full of culture, nature and enjoyment. There is still enough time to cycle back to Melk in the afternoon or early evening.

The best place to start is in Melk in the morning, cycle through the old town and across fields up to Schallaburg Castle, enjoy lunch there in the castle restaurant and then visit the exhibition and the Renaissance garden.

The last few metres uphill to Schallaburg Castle are a little steeper - it's better to push than exert yourself.
Always take enough water with you, especially on hot days.

Yes, the tour is very easy to do by public transport. It is only about 5 minutes by bike from Melk railway station to the starting point at the Mole. Alternatively, there is also a bus to Schallaburg Castle if you want to start or end the tour there. If you wish, you can also make the return journey from Loosdorf railway station (approx. 5 km from Schallaburg Castle) after the cycle tour. This allows you to organise the route flexibly.
Starting point in Melk: Parking is available at the harbour tip area at the Melk pier. There is a charge for this car park.
Schallaburg: If you start the tour from the top or backwards or would like to park a car there, there are plenty of free parking spaces available at Schallaburg Castle.
