Lauscha - idyllically situated in the middle of the Thuringian Forest, slate-covered houses and green forests determine the image of the town. The small town is known as the cradle of glass and the birthplace of glass Christmas tree decorations. Around 1880, the American trader Mister Woolworth became aware of the Lauscha Christmas tree decorations, and from then on, these Christmas decorations began their triumphal march around the world. Between 1870 and 1939, about 5000 different shapes were produced. The Christmas tree decorations were made in home workshops and sold all over the world via the Sonneberg publishing houses.
In 1853 ELIAS Glashütte- Farbglashuette Lauscha was founded, the first glassworks where coloured glass was melted and glass was made for human eyes.
Today, ELIAS Glashütte- Farbglashuette Lauscha is the last glassworks in Germany where glass is still made from sand, soda, potash, a lot of heart and soul and love at 1500°C at night, from which tubes and rods are drawn by hand, glass for people's eyes is produced, glasses and plates made of forest glass are made at the furnace and garden balls are blown in one by one in pure manual labour.
