Groppenstein Gorge Obervellach

From the starting point in the village of Räuflach near Obervellach, initially on the - in the direction of ascent - right riverbank on a gently ascending path to the first highlight of the gorge, a magical ensemble of potholes (rock formations circularly eroded by water). Here we cross the stream on a bridge and ascend several switchbacks until the view opens for the first time on the Great Groppenstein Waterfall. On a lofty boardwalk, we reach above the mighty waterfall. Then a bit flatter again, mostly on boardwalks, directly above the water through the very narrow gorge here. The boardwalk at the upper end of the Groppenstein Gorge is particularly spectacular: on an impressive boardwalk, we approach the roaring Zechner Waterfall, a showpiece at the upper entrance of the gorge. Then a few turns upward to the left in the forest until we reach the hiking path "Nach dem Glanz." Here we could turn left, past Groppenstein Castle, back to the starting point.

By car:
Via the B106, in the village of Raufen is the starting point with sufficient parking available.

By train/bus:
ÖBB station Mallnitz-Obervellach, from there by bus to Obervellach and further to the bus stop Raufen.
