The south side of Villacher Alpe is the largest landslide massif of the Southern Alps. In 1348, the entire south side of the mountain collapsed due to an earthquake, killing nearly 2,000 people. Even today, boulders along the highway testify to this event. This area is now a nature reserve (Carinthia's first nature park) and provides habitat for rare animals and plants. At the summit of Villacher Alpe stands the highest church in Europe, at 2,160 m above sea level. Short but even steeper, almost 20 %, is the climb to Windische Höhe. There is also a short but easy climb to Krastal, known mainly for the quarrying of white Krastal marble.
