On this stage, you cross the state border from Hesse to Rhineland-Palatinate and immerse yourself deeply in the picturesque landscape of the lower Lahn valley. You can expect 4 locks and an unforgettable paddling experience.
Green information boards visible from the water mark specially designated entry and exit points or resting places for water hikers. Landing of paddle boats is only allowed at these points. The start and end of a boat route are only possible at entry and exit points. Resting places can only be reached from the water; there is no access by car.
All designated entry and exit points and resting places along the Lahn with the available infrastructure can be found on the overview map.

The entry and exit point Limburg boat slip facility is located on the right bank of the Lahn at the motorway bridge. From here you start the route from Limburg to the lower Lahn valley. You paddle into the cathedral city and bypass the Limburg weir in the lock on the right side of the Lahn. Like all other locks that you will now follow downstream, the Limburg lock is also operated by lock personnel. Caution, the flow velocity behind the lock is strong.
Now you paddle towards the Oranien city Diez and into Rhineland-Palatinate. Castle Oranienstein towers high above the Lahn. Past the Diez campsite you reach the Diez lock after about 7.5 kilometers. The lock is located on the right side of the Lahn. 500 m further you will find a lovely rest area for canoe hikers on the left river side. From here you can take a nice walk through the old town of Diez with its counts castle.
You are now in the romantic Nassau Nature Park and paddle past the mineral water town Fachingen after a total of 11 kilometers. The Fachingen spring was discovered in 1740. Next, after a few bends of the Lahn and a further 4 kilometers, you reach the picturesque town of Balduinstein, recognizable by the Schaumburg high on the hill. You go through the Cramberg lock on the right side of the Lahn one kilometer later.
Next are the town of Geilnau and the lock Scheid, also on the right side. Here you have already covered 21 kilometers of this stage. Now you paddle through the Cramberg Lahn bend. High above the Lahn, an observation pavilion greets you in the Gabelstein-Hölloch nature reserve. The entry and exit point Laurenburg Bridge is located on the right bank of the Lahn, directly at the road bridge. Time to relax and visit the town of Laurenburg with its castle of the same name.
Paddling is fun in any weather. Protect yourself in cool and damp weather with a water- and windproof jacket with hood.
In sunshine, the sun intensity is often underestimated because it feels pleasantly cool on the water. Protect yourself with a head covering against too much sun exposure. Shoes do not have to be pretty, but above all fit firmly. The best are lace-up, sports, or special paddling shoes.
To store spare clothes and valuables, waterproof barrels or dry bags are recommended. If you book your route through a canoe tour operator, they will provide them for you. Store your electronic devices only in waterproof containers!
The Lahn must not be navigated when reaching the HWS (highest shipping water level)! The HWS is a preliminary stage to high water. You can find current Lahn water levels here. A brief explanation of the water level presentations is provided here.
At the QMW canoe seal (quality management water tourism), you recognize certified providers of canoe tours and rentals. This award goes to companies that stand for preserving nature and water landscapes and offer their guests safe and professional quality. These companies work with trained staff, have environmentally compatible operations, and constantly optimize safety and practical signage for their guests. These companies provide life jackets free of charge because safety must not cost anything!
Always wear your life jacket whenever you are on the water, and pay special attention to ensure no child is sitting in the canoe without a life jacket.
If you are traveling with a canoe tour operator, have them provide thorough instruction in canoeing. Have a river description given to you that you can take with you on your river trip. The river description should provide information on all entry and exit points, rest and overnight places, as well as special natural areas marked on a map. Also, you should be instructed on the nature features of the respective river. If you are traveling on your own, obtain map material containing this necessary information. The latest regulations on protected areas can be found in the section "Current Infos".
Via the B49 or the A3 to Limburg.
The Limburg train station is 2 kilometers from the entry and exit point. From here, go via Hospitalstraße, Grabenstraße, and Konrad-Kurzbold-Straße to the old Lahn bridge. Cross the Lahn and go into Schleusenweg behind the lock. Now stay on the Lahn bank until you reach the entry and exit point Limburg-Boots-Slipanlage behind the campsite.
Alternatively, from Limburg train station take the bus (LM-1) to the stop Seilerbahn/Parkbad. From here it is only 650 m to the entry and exit point. Walk down the street "Am Haustein" and then right into Schleusenweg.
Parking spaces available at Schleusenweg.
