The circular route from Kauhava via Pernaja to Alahärmä, then through Voltti to Lappajärvi and back to Kauhava is a calm trip for a couple of days and nights, but it can be done in one night as well. This way, you can enjoy the scenery too.
The route starting from Kauhava goes through open fields, Ostrobothnian villages, and forests to Alahärmä, where you can spend a day enjoying the rides at Power Park. From the village of Voltti, you find Knuuttilanraitti and its splendid Ostrobothnian houses. On the way to Lappajärvi, there are some good hills in the forest sections, so not everything is flat farmland.
The center of Kortesjärvi is slightly off the route but is a good stop to replenish your snack pack. In Lappajärvi, you find nice accommodation options ranging from hotels to more affordable ones. The route continues back to Kauhava through both forested landscapes and traditional farmland and villages.
For this ring route, we start from Kauhava station and turn right onto Kauppatie, which becomes Hemmingintie as we head toward Perna, about 4.8 km away. From there, turn north onto Varpulantie and continue 7.2 km to the intersection with road 19. Cross the intersection and continue 3.6 km along Porontie, after which the road becomes Yliviitalantie. Continue about 9.7 km to an intersection, then turn left onto Siltatie toward Alahärmä center. From the roundabout, turn right, and there is the center. From the roundabout, it is two kilometers through the center to an intersection where you turn right onto Knuuttilanraitti, along which are splendid Ostrobothnian houses. 3.8 km ahead is an intersection where you turn right onto road 738. Drive this 17 kilometers until you meet Pietarsaarentie, road 741. Turn right and continue 26.4 km to Lappajärvi. The route continues from the intersection of roads 741 and 711 to the right, southward, but from here it is easy to make a detour to Lappajärvi center, where you can find shops and a pharmacy. The distance from the intersection to the center is about 2.5 km.
The route continues south on Länsirannantie (711) for 9.8 km until you reach an intersection where you turn right onto road 733, Lappajärventie. Continue on the same road for 24.4 km to Kauhava, and near the center, you can choose the route turning left through the city along Kauppatie, leading to the railway station, about 3.7 km.
The route has a few sections with bike lanes; otherwise, it runs along country roads, where some heavy traffic is also present. Generally speaking, drivers pay good attention to cyclists.
You can easily reach Kauhava by train, and the IC train also allows you to bring your bike.
However, if you come by car, you can also park it at the railway station parking lot.
It's worth reserving some extra time for the trip to stop and have fun at Power Park. On the return trip, it’s recommended to explore Kauhava’s versatile services, including the Iisakki Järvenpää Puukko Factory or the Lankava yarn shop.
