This museum is dedicated to the construction of Austria’s first steam railway in 1837 and was opened in 1987 to mark the 150th anniversary of the railway in Austria.
The first railway line in what was then the Austrian Empire was the
Kaiser Ferdinand Northern Railway, which runs from Vienna to Kraków in present-day Poland.
The first section was the line from Floridsdorf near Vienna to Wagram, now known as Deutsch-Wagram, and was opened on 23 November 1837. This date marks the beginning of the steam railway era in Austria and is thus the birth of the railway in Austria.
