The Holy Mountain is one of the most important spiritual and historical sites in the Lipizzanerheimat. Rising 539 metres above sea level in the Kainach Valley, it combines a rich cultural heritage with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
The site dates back to a foundation established by Countess Eleonora Eusebia von Wagensperg, who commissioned the construction of a church and a chapel with a replica of the Holy Sepulchre in 1660. During the 18th century, the complex was expanded with several chapels and a Calvary group. The artistic sandstone sculptures were created by the renowned Styrian Baroque sculptor Philipp Jakob Straub.
Archaeological discoveries show that the Holy Mountain was inhabited long before its Christian history began. Particularly significant are the remains from the Late Urnfield Period around 800 BC, which were uncovered during excavations in the 1970s.
Since 1976, a Carmelite convent has also been located on the Holy Mountain. Together with the church, it continues to shape the unique atmosphere of this special place, inviting visitors to experience tranquillity, reflection and the rich history of the region.
