Wachenheim - Römertour

The Römertour (Wine Hiking Trail No. 15) in Wachenheim starts at the town hall square. From here we turn right, along Bahnhofstraße, until we reach the street "Am Alten Galgen," where we turn left. The station is in close proximity. We walk along the street and pass the sports field. Looking westward, we see the Wachtenburg (11th/12th century), also called the "Balcony of the Palatinate," nestled in the Palatinate Forest. Then we walk a bit to the L525 country road. There we turn right and at the next opportunity turn left again. We soon find ourselves in the vineyards around Wachenheim and repeatedly enjoy a beautiful view over the town. Soon we follow the road to the right and arrive at the Villa Rustica, a former Roman estate. Information boards inform us about what the original facility around 20 AD must have looked like. Today, only remains are preserved, but the foundations hint at the original shape. After the visit, we walk a few meters back along the route and cross the federal road via a pedestrian bridge, turn left after the bridge, and take the first turn to the right to head east. We always follow the signage, a black 15 on a white background. After about 400 m we turn left again and stay on this path until we reach the Mandelgarten hut with an idyllic rest area. We continue through the vineyards heading north and west, always following the signs, until we cross the federal road. After crossing, we turn left, pass the Abtnußbaum farm, continuing south. Along the path to Wachenheim lies a memorial stone to the former field area "im Abtsnußbaum" where we can take a rest on a wooden bench. Soon we see the first houses of Wachenheim and reach Römerweg via the street "Im Neustück," which we follow to the Jewish cemetery (first mentioned in 1522). After a few meters, we finally reach the town hall square/tourist information and arrive at the destination of our circular hike.
