Passo Pordoi - in the Fassa Dolomites, excursions and hikes in the footsteps of history

The Passo Pordoi, bordered by the Sass Pordoi and the Sass Becé, forms the border between the provinces of Trento and Belluno and lies 12 kilometres from Canazei, marked by a good 28 hairpin bends. It is one of the four passes on the Dolomite road, built at the beginning of the 20th century to connect Bolzano with Cortina d'Ampezzo and to promote tourism in the Ladin valleys. Passo Pordoi is linked to important periods of national history: from the battles of the First World War, still witnessed today by the German war cemetery, to Maria Piaz, pioneer of tourism in Val di Fassa and sister of the famous mountaineer Tita Piaz, and to the sporting endeavours of the Giro d'Italia, as commemorated by the monument to Fausto Coppi.

In summer, the Pordoi is a favourite starting point for challenging excursions, via ferratas or easy hiking trails, such as the ‘Viel dal Pan’, an ancient path once used by bread merchants travelling between Veneto and Trentino. The Boé mountain group can be reached quickly from the pass thanks to the ultra-modern cable car. In just a few minutes, the cable car reaches the 2950 metres of Sass Pordoi, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Alpine region.
