The eye is certainly spoiled on the Castle route between Wernberg and Velden with the castles Damtschach, Wernberg, Rosegg and Velden and 22 small monuments. Almost 30 kilometers (exactly 29.6) it goes uphill and downhill from the tourist information in Velden via Wernberg to Rosegg and back to Velden. One thing is certain, I can recommend the almost 30-kilometer-long Castle bike path to anyone who is reasonably fit. At the tourist info in Velden, you receive a folder including directions and, if desired, can immediately download the free Castle bike path app for iOS or Android via the FreeSeeLan. The app not only shows the route but also interesting information about the castles and monuments located on the Castle bike path.
On the route, after nearly seven kilometers, you reach Damtschach Castle, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century and can be visited from May 1 to October 10 by appointment. The gallery is a venue for contemporary art during the café's opening hours, and occasionally there are even concerts and theatre performances.
Just a stone's throw from here is the next castle on the route, Wernberg Castle. First documented in 1227, Wernberg Castle operates as a monastery. Here you'll find delicacies from own production, fine products from yogurt to homemade pasta and teas, which can be purchased at the monastery shop Monday through Saturday. The purchases fit well in your backpack, and after a snack at the monastery restaurant, you head to the next castle well fortified.
Rosegg Castle is located about 14 kilometers from the last stop. Well known is the nearby wildlife park, where bison, lynx, and red deer can be observed, though you should allow enough time to visit. Popular with children are the petting zoo and the playground where they can really let off steam. The Rosegg Castle itself houses Austria’s first figure cabinet and a castle café. A few meters away, visitors can explore the garden labyrinth, made of over 3,000 hornbeams.
After an extensive visit to Rosegg, the Castle bike path leads back to the route’s starting point with a final stop at the Hotel Schloss Velden. Built in the 16th century, Velden Castle lies directly on the shore of Lake Wörthersee and has been operated as a hotel with interruptions since the late 19th century. In the early 1990s, among other things, the TV series “Ein Schloss am Wörthersee” was filmed here, at the last castle on the Castle bike path.
