What Otto Dix found "disgustingly beautiful" has inspired artists and writers for over a hundred years. Where Otto Dix, Adolf Dietrich, Erich Heckel, and many others once set up their easels, today stations of the cross-border Untersee art route show the artist's view of the landscape. Those who take a position behind the iron steles with reproductions of the artworks will see the picture and landscape motif in direct comparison. Some of the original paintings can be seen at the Hesse Museum Gaienhofen. But first, just like the painters once did, it’s on foot across the Höri. The hike leads past artists' houses, studios, and museums to particularly beautiful viewpoints. And naturally to the shore of Lake Constance, where gastronomy invites you to linger.
The brochure for the art route can be requested free of charge at: BodenSeeWest Tourismus e.V., info@bodenseewest.eu, www.bodenseewest.eu.
The route begins with an artwork by Peter Lenk at the Tourist Information Gaienhofen. The sculpture shows the 2 figures from the Großstadttriptychon by Otto Dix, the most famous Höri artist. After crossing the square, follow Kapellenstraße to the Hesse Museum Gaienhofen, which houses some of the original paintings that you will see on the route – visit the Künstlerlandschaft Höri section at the beginning or at the end of your route. At the end of Kapellenstraße, cross the “Hohenmarkt” and follow the street “Hinter Weingarten.” At the town hall, the street “Auf der Breite” turns right. Immediately next to the Ludwig-Finckh-Haus, the “Ludwig-Finckh-Weg” branches off to the left, at the end of which, after a short ascent, the first art stele stands. Here Walter Waentig painted his Unterseelandschaft (13) in 1920; you can still enjoy the fantastic view today, and a park bench invites you to linger. Follow the path to the left, past the barbecue area down into the wooded area. After a few meters, take the path to the right; after just under 1 km, you will come to the street towards Mühlbachhof on the left. There, next to the stone cross, there is a bench for the next break with a view that Helmut Macke immortalized in his watercolor Untersee (12) in 1935. Continue straight along the street, then after nearly a kilometer you will reach Frauengrund (15), where Curth Georg Beckers created his eponymous watercolor: at the crossroads, turn right immediately next to the park bench. Continue down the Alten Weg to the main street, then turn right. Those interested can take a detour at Häsliacker to the cemetery with the graves of Otto Dix and Erich Heckel. The former Brücke painter's house can be found on Erich-Heckel-Weg. At the Hauptstraße/Mühlbachweg junction stands the stele with Heckel's painting Dorf am See (16), inspired in 1959 by the view from Heckel's studio window. Walk 100 m to the right along the main street, then turn right again into Walter-Kaesbach-Weg and immediately left again into Otto-Dix-Weg. Through the gate and the park, you reach Museum Haus Dix. Here, in 1940, the picture Otto Dix beim Spaziergang (9) was photographed. Then return to the main street; at the Heckel stele, take the right Kirchsteig path down to the lake. In the Alte Mühle (between Hauptstraße and St. Agatha Church), Helmuth Macke ran a small guesthouse with his wife. Follow the lake shore to the left. In Uferstraße, in a courtyard driveway (opposite the access to Uferpark), a depiction of Saint George by Helmuth Macke can be seen on the house wall. Just before the Hotel Hoeri on the embankment wall, the photo Otto Dix beim Angeln (10) was taken in 1940. Cross the landing stage; at the end of Uferstraße (in front of Haus Stern), a narrow footpath leads left back to the main street. Cross it into Curth-Georg-Becker-Weg, go up the Seehalde on the right, then right again along the narrowing path to the orchard. There, a path branches off right that leads you to Hermann-Hesse-Weg. Pass Hermann Hesse's second residence. Go down to the right to the main street. There, immediately after the church, turn right down to the lake, where the stele Landesteg Gaienhofen (14) by Walter Herzger is located on the jetty. The beach path leads past a campsite into a small woodland. Soon take the meadow path up to the left through the nature reserve area to the street “Im Bänkle.” There turn left, cross the main street to Kapellenstraße. Your starting point, the Tourist Information, is on the right.
