The 4.5 km long and 1.5 km wide island of Reichenau is the largest of the three Lake Constance islands. On its fields and in the greenhouses, the gardeners of Reichenau cultivate tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. In the nets of the professional fishermen, Kretzer, whitefish, and pike-perch wriggle. Furthermore, the smallest independent wine cooperative in Germany's southernmost wine-growing region produces first-class Lake Constance wines. All these delicacies can be sampled on the way in various restaurants or bought directly from the producers.
The route around the island also offers a lot in terms of cultural history. It is recommended to visit the three Romanesque churches St. George, St. Peter and Paul, and the Münster St. Maria and Markus along with their museum units, to learn more about the impressive history of Reichenau.
Several opportunities for cooling off on hot summer days are available along the route.
We start the route around the World Heritage island at Reichenau station. From there, we follow Kindlebildstraße onto the Insel dam. It runs along extensive nature reserves, visible on both sides of the path. An excellent spot to observe the activity in the "Wollmatinger Ried" nature reserve is the Schropflen ruin.
From the bike path, we can already see the St. George church. It was built at the end of the 9th century and is world-renowned for its monumental murals. At the first intersection, we turn right onto Seestraße. On the left is a daily open, free museum as well as public toilets.
We follow Seestraße until we turn right onto Hermannus-Contractus-Straße. After a few meters, a wall passage leads to the monastery garden, laid out after Abbot Walahfrid. Following the Walahfrid-Strabo path, we reach the former monastery church of the Benedictine abbey Reichenau, the Münster St. Maria and Markus.
From there, we cycle down Burgstraße and turn left into Schulstraße. At the end of Schulstraße, we turn right and then left onto Schulstraße again. We follow the street to the third Romanesque church St. Peter & Paul. There is also another museum unit and public toilets here.
We follow Niederzellerstraße until a sign to the campsite appears on the right. At the campsite, you can enjoy a refreshing cool down in Lake Constance. Afterwards, we continue cycling along Bradlengasse, which runs along the lakeside path. The bike path is now marked on the ground.
From the boat dock, we continue via Thurgauer Weg into Schlossstraße. Once at the top of the hill, we cycle a stretch along Obere Rheinstraße until we turn left into Moosweg. We follow this along the vineyards until we meet Oberzeller Straße. At the intersection, we turn right and follow the street until we can turn left again into Abtswiese. We ride along the shore until we cross Pirminstraße and return on the bike path over the Insel dam back to the station.
