A tragic page in the history of British troops on French soil during the First World War.
From the church, head towards the Memorial. It is one of the many military pilgrimages in the Land of the Poppy, with the poppy flower as the emblem of the "tommies." Pass by the Newfoundland Memorial. There are two war memorials, one in Beaumont and the other in Hamel, depicting a "mater dolorosa" mourning a fallen soldier. Pass near one of the many British Empire cemeteries. Located where British soldiers fell, the cemeteries all feature their high stone cross inlaid with a bronze sword. Next to it stands the Scottish monument, a large white stone Celtic cross evoking the sacrifice of the 8th Battalion of Highlanders who died to the sound of the bagpipe. Follow the Green Path towards Auchonvillers to return to the starting point.
