The highest mountain in Germany – the Zugspitze

Without exaggeration: the 2,962-metre-high Zugspitze is a mountain of superlatives. Germany's highest peak is the home to three glaciers, a unique 360° panorama with Alpine peaks from four countries and an attractive range of experiences.

A summer day on the Zugspitze gives you mountains full of possibilities:
Let your gaze wander over 400 Alpine peaks in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, go on an exciting glacier hike or treat yourself to a speedy toboggan run on natural snow.

Zugspitze Ticket
Once to the top floor of Germany and back, please! Take the cogwheel train from the Zugspitzbahn station Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Grainau and Eibsee to the Zugspitzplatt and from there take the Gletscherbahn cable car to the summit. The descent with the Cable car Zugspitze offers a spectacular view of the Eibsee before the cogwheel train takes you comfortably back to the starting point. All in all!

Glacier feeling in high summer and culinary delights at the Zugspitzplatt

Panorama 2962
The best of four countries

The completely new summit gastronomy is an excellent reason to float up to the Zugspitze. At almost 3,000 m above sea level, the multifunctional restaurant is an architectural feast for the eyes. Typical specialties from the Alpine region are served, garnished with plenty of panoramic views.

One milestone follows the next on Germany's highest mountain. Following the commissioning of the state-of-the-art Cable car Zugspitze in December 2017 and the opening of the new summit restaurant Panorama 2962, these impressions - spectacular ascent and culinary delights - combine to create an outstanding overall experience. In total, the gastronomic ensemble with counter service offers space for around 450 guests inside and around 850 outside. From quick coffee and snacks to dignified menus and group celebrations, conferences and concerts: the various areas and multifunctional rooms make everything possible.

Alpine delicacies for every taste
In reference to the 4-country panoramic view on the Zugspitze, the culinary motto is simply "The best of 4 countries". Specialties and products from Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany represent the delicious diversity of the Alpine region on the menus. In this case, regional means that ingredients and inspiration come from within a radius of 250 km. Great importance is also attached to organic and GQB (certified Bavarian quality) certified products as well as fair trade.

The central contact point for culinary refreshments before or after the visit to the summit this summer is the Zugspitzplatt. At an altitude of 2,600 m, where the cogwheel train and the Gletscherbahn cable car meet, mountain lovers have the pleasant choice between the cozy Sonnalpin self-service restaurant and the modern glazed Gletschergarten. Recharged with fresh energy, you can enjoy the fascinating world of ice and snow and the wide range of adventures offers on the Zugspitzplatt more intensely. Here, the whole family can toboggan on natural snow, balance and clamber in the Alpinpark Zugspitze, take part in free glacier and technical tours, walk along the Glacier Trail or visit the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Visitation.

Prices summer 2024: The Zugspitze ticket costs Euro 72.00 for adults. Attractive family discounts are available on all cable car tickets for families with children.

Garmisch Classic Hiking Region: hiking tours with assisted ascents

The original alpine pastures and rocky landscapes between the Alpspitze, Kreuzeck and Hausberg form a diverse hiking paradise, made accessible to all by the Kreuzeckbahn and Alpspitzbahn cable cars. Thanks to the mountain cableway services, families and day trippers can access the easy hiking trails, geological nature trail or the path to Höllentalklamm Gorge. The more ambitious head from the cable car top station to high alpine mountain and climbing tours in the Wetterstein limestone. As a special service, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn has compiled a list of the most beautiful hiking routes below the Alpspitze. The tour tips in every level of difficulty are available to download on zugspitze.de/tourentipps and can also be found in practical postcard format at cable car cash desks.
A highpoint for both novice and experienced mountain enthusiasts takes viewers literally into the depths at the top station of the Alpspitzbahn cable car. Perched over a thousand meter abyss, the AlpspiX viewing platform opens up views of the Zugspitze, Waxensteine, Alpspitz-North Wall and down into the wild Höllental Valley. Your efforts can be rewarded with a break for refreshments at the welcoming Café Kandahar 2 in the base station of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car, where hikers and day trippers savour sweet and savoury snacks, coffee and drinks on the sun terrace, with views of the blossoming World Cup slope.

Prices summer 2024: The Garmisch-Classic Ticket costs Euro 35.50 for adults and includes either a round trip with the Alpspitz-/Hochalm and Kreuzeckbahn cable cars, or a mountain ascent and descent with the Alpspitz-/Hochalmbahn cable car, or a mountain ascent and descent with the Kreuzeckbahn.

Panoramic Mount Wank: The best prospects for art and culture

Natural spectacle for everyone

The effortless ascent with the Wankbahn cable car also allows families and senior citizens to enjoy the beautiful view from the panoramic Mount Wank. From the 1,780-metre-high summit opposite the Zugspitze, there is a fabulous panoramic view of the Ester-, Ammer-, Karwendel- and Wetterstein mountains, down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and into the Loisach Valley as far as the borders of Munich.

Relax with a wide view
There are countless ways to explore the Sonnenberg in the Werdenfelser Land: Hike leisurely down or up from the mountain and middle station. Circumnavigate the summit plateau on the 3 km long high-altitude trail. Watch the paragliders and hang gliders preparing for take-off and maneuvers from one of the many benches. Maybe even try a tandem flight for beginners yourself? Stop off at the mountain inns and enjoy Bavarian delicacies on the sun terrace of the Sonnenalm…

Prices summer 2024: A mountain ascent and descent with the Wankbahn costs Euro 27.50 for adults. Single journeys, such as from the top station down to the valley, or up the mountain from the middle station are available from the cash desk at the base station of the Wankbahn cable car.
